What level of urbex is right for you? Beginner, amateur, or expert – find your ideal spot
Understand the differences between each level of urban exploration and choose the spot that suits you.
Why classify urbex spots by level?
Each urbex spot has its own unique characteristics: accessibility, safety, atmosphere, and complexity. By classifying locations by level, we help each explorer have an experience tailored to their profile, while limiting risks.
🟢 Novice Level: to start safely
Beginner- level spots are perfect for those new to urbex. Easily accessible, with no break-ins or particular challenges, they allow you to familiarize yourself with abandoned sites in complete safety.
- Free or very easy access
- No specific equipment required
- Calm and unobtrusive atmosphere
Example: old disused school with open entrance
🟡 Amateur Level: more intense immersion
Amateur locations require more vigilance. They can be entered discreetly, the structures are larger or damaged, and the atmosphere is more oppressive. This is a good compromise for urban explorers with some experience.
- Semi-open or discreet access
- Requires lamp, good shoes, location
- More technical exploration (floors, tunnels, etc.)
Example: old semi-fenced factory with identified access points
🔴 Expert Level: the elite of urbex
Expert spots are reserved for seasoned enthusiasts. Access is complex, they involve complete isolation, and they are unstable or sensitive. They require foresight, discretion, and absolute respect for the areas explored.
- Difficult access, places rarely known
- Mandatory equipment (helmet, gloves, masks, etc.)
- Strong, sometimes risky atmospheres (large hospitals, mines, tunnels)
Example: remote sanatorium in the heart of the forest, ruined building
Why do prices vary depending on the level?
The more inaccessible or exclusive a location is, the more verification, reconnaissance, and even contact it requires. Expert spots are rare, often unstable or sensitive, which explains the higher price, justified by the rarity and value of the experience offered.
